A Word Before We Begin

Welcome to Module 0. Before we dive into the seven Hermetic principles, before we wrestle with quantum mechanics, before we attempt any of the comparisons that will occupy the rest of this course, we need to do something simpler and more important. We need to get our bearings.

This module is an orientation in the truest sense of the word. The Latin root means “to face east.” To locate yourself in relation to the rising sun so you know which way you’re going. That’s what we’re doing here. We’re standing at the confluence of two great rivers of human inquiry, one flowing from the temples of Greco-Roman Egypt and the other from the laboratories of twentieth-century Europe, and we’re asking whether they empty into the same ocean or into different seas.

I’ve spent over thirty years with both rivers. My engineering training in the Navy gave me my first real taste of the mathematical precision of modern physics. Decades of private-sector engineering work kept that precision sharp. And alongside all of that, a deepening study of alchemy, the Hermetic principles, and the great wisdom traditions gave me the other river. What I can tell you, as honestly as I know how, is that the relationship between these two currents is real, it is fascinating, and it is far more nuanced than either the confident New Age version or the dismissive skeptical version would have you believe.

Here is what I want to be clear about right at the start. This course is not going to tell you that quantum physics proves the Hermetic principles. It is also not going to tell you that the Hermetic principles are nonsense that modern science has disproved. Both of those positions are easy. Both of those positions are wrong. The honest position is harder and better. It requires that we understand what both traditions are saying, on their own terms, before we compare them. And it requires a set of intellectual tools that most people never pick up.

That is what Module 0 is for. By the end of this module, you will know what Hermeticism actually is, where it came from, and what it actually teaches. You will have a working grasp of the quantum revolution and why physicists still argue about what their own equations mean. And you will have learned the three-level correspondence framework that the rest of this course depends on. The framework is not complicated, but it changes how you read everything that follows. It is, frankly, one of the most useful intellectual tools I can offer you. Once you have it, you will never look at a “quantum healing” advertisement the same way again. You will also never dismiss a genuine parallel between physics and the wisdom traditions just because it sounds like something from a yoga studio.

A note on spirit. This is an introductory module, but do not mistake introductory for superficial. We are going to look at the history carefully. We are going to let the scholars tell us what the sources say. We are going to let the physicists tell us what the mathematics implies. And then, at the end, we are going to ask the question that matters: if we hold both traditions with respect and precision, what do we see?

Ready? Let’s do this.

The Questions That Matter

Why This Module Exists

This course is built on a simple but serious question: did the ancient Hermeticists encode knowledge about the fundamental nature of reality that modern physics is only now rediscovering?

It is a question that has been asked carelessly by a lot of people over the last fifty years and answered dogmatically from both directions. Our job across the sixteen modules of this course is to ask it carefully, answer it honestly, and hold the uncertainty where uncertainty is the only honest answer.

Before we can do that, we must know where we stand. That means understanding both traditions on their own terms. It means knowing what Hermeticism is, rather than what the latest meme claims it is. It means knowing what quantum mechanics says, rather than what your favorite YouTube channel extrapolates from it. And it means knowing the difference between a genuine structural parallel, a suggestive analogy, and a sloppy appropriation that just borrows the vocabulary. These distinctions are the difference between real inquiry and noise.

Module 0 gives you the map. Every subsequent module applies it.

The Four Essential Questions

Module 0 is organized around four essential questions. These questions are not rhetorical. Each one will be answered with as much honesty and specificity as I can muster, drawing on the best available scholarship. Sit with them. Notice which ones provoke you. Your reaction is data.

Essential Question 1: What is Hermeticism, and why has it persisted for millennia? The word gets used for everything from a 1908 New Thought tract to the secret rituals of eighteenth-century Freemasons to the margin notes in Isaac Newton’s private alchemical manuscripts. Behind the variety sits an actual tradition with actual sources, actual textual history, and actual content. We need to know what that tradition is before we can ask whether modern physics confirms, challenges, or illuminates it.

Essential Question 2: What is quantum physics, and why does it disturb our intuitions about reality? Quantum mechanics is the most successful physical theory ever created, confirmed to extraordinary precision in experiment after experiment. It is also one of the most philosophically unsettled theories in the history of science. Understanding why it disturbed its own creators, why Einstein refused to accept it, why Schrödinger devised his famous cat thought experiment as a protest, is essential preparation for everything that follows.

Essential Question 3: Are these two traditions describing the same reality from different vantage points, or is the apparent convergence illusory? This is the meta-question of the entire course. We cannot answer it yet. We can, however, begin to see what an honest answer would look like and what it would require. It would require, at minimum, that we understand both traditions well enough to recognize genuine isomorphism when we see it and to spot false correspondence when someone tries to sell it to us.

Essential Question 4: What intellectual tools do we need to investigate this question honestly? Without the right tools, the inquiry collapses into whatever bias we brought in the door. This is where the three-level correspondence framework comes in, along with the classical logical fallacies that most commonly trip people up at the intersection of science and spirituality. These tools are not optional. They are what separates genuine inquiry from confirmation bias dressed up in quantum vocabulary.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • Trace the historical development of the Hermetic tradition from the Greco-Roman Egypt of the first three centuries through the Arabic transmission of the Middle Ages, the Renaissance revival of the fifteenth century, and the modern New Thought period of the early twentieth century.
  • Name and briefly describe the primary textual sources of Hermeticism. The Corpus Hermeticum, the Emerald Tablet, and the Kybalion, and explain what each one is, when it was written, and what its strengths and limitations are as a source.
  • Summarize the quantum revolution of 1900 to 1930 in terms of its key figures, its central experimental puzzles, and the essential philosophical problem it bequeathed to us. The measurement problem.
  • Distinguish between what quantum mechanics says and what popular spiritual culture commonly claims it says, particularly regarding the role of the observer.
  • Apply the three-level correspondence framework, genuine isomorphism, deep analogy, false correspondence, to any proposed parallel between Hermetic and scientific claims.
  • Identify the genetic fallacy, the fallacy of equivocation, the principle of charity, and the principle of precision in your own reasoning and in the claims of others.
  • Articulate your own starting position on the relationship between Hermetic wisdom and modern physics, including an honest inventory of the biases you bring to the inquiry.
