Bridge to Module 2

You have now established the intellectual lineage. You know where this idea comes from, who has held it, how it has developed, and where it has been distorted. You have begun your first personal experiment with it.

Module 2 is where we move from history and philosophy to science. And the first piece of scientific evidence we examine is, in many ways, the most compelling and the most practically relevant: the placebo effect, the most rigorously documented case of belief influencing physical reality in the history of medicine.

Here is what I want you to carry from Module 1 into Module 2: the ancient traditions were not simply asserting that the mind is powerful because it makes you feel better or try harder. They were claiming something more radical. That the mind, at a deep level, participates in the construction of physical reality. The placebo effect is the first piece of empirical evidence for that claim. It is not sufficient evidence. We will need much more, and we will gather it across sixteen weeks. But it is a beginning, and it is a substantial one.

A Note Before You Go

Hold what you have learned here lightly. Not dismissively. The intellectual lineage we have examined is genuinely profound, and it deserves the respect that comes from serious engagement. But lightly, in the sense of not closing down prematurely. You are at the beginning of an investigation, not the end of one. The most valuable thing you can bring to the rest of this course is what the Zen tradition calls ‘beginner’s mind’

The quality of attention that remains genuinely open to being surprised.  Your inner work is the most powerful thing you can do for the world.
