Essential Questions for This Module
Before moving into Step 1, sit with these questions. Don’t rush past them to the exercise. The point is not to answer them quickly. The point is to let them open something in you that a quick answer would close.
You’ve probably been turning some version of these questions over for years without finding anyone who took them seriously. Here, they are taken seriously.
Essential Question 1
What is the difference between the story you tell others about who you are and the model you run your life from?
Most of us have a well-rehearsed narrative of ourselves. One we’ve told enough times that it flows easily in conversation. That narrative is not necessarily false. But it is almost certainly curated. It emphasizes the experiences that confirm how we want to be seen and quietly edits out the ones that don’t.
The model you run your life from is something different. It shows up not in what you say about yourself, but in what you do when no one is watching, in the assumptions you make without noticing you’re making them, in the reactions that surprise you with their intensity, in the opportunities you don’t quite allow yourself to take.
Where are those two things most different? That gap is where the operative identity lives.
Essential Question 2
If your brain is a prediction machine defending a model of yourself, what model is it defending?
Not what you wish the model were. Not the version you’d describe in a job interview or on a good day. What, based on your actual behavior and patterns over the past year, does the brain appear to believe about who you are?
Look at where you’ve held back when you wanted to move forward. Look at the patterns that have repeated despite your clear intention to do something different. Look at how you’ve interpreted events that were genuinely ambiguous. Whether you defaulted to the generous interpretation or the cautious one, the hopeful or the guarded.
The model is revealed by the pattern, not by the aspiration. What does the pattern tell you?
Essential Question 3 – Going Deeper
What would have to be true about you, about your worth, your capability, your safety, for your current operative identity to make complete sense?
This is the question underneath the first two. Operative identity doesn’t emerge from nowhere. It was constructed by an organism trying to survive and make sense of its experience, usually under conditions that no longer exist. The priors that once protected you are now, in many cases, the walls you’re trying to get through.
Understanding what the model was built to protect, not judging it, just understanding it, is what makes it possible to update it with compassion rather than force.
