Module 1: Recommended Video Media
The following resources are specifically recommended for this module. They are not required viewing, but they are carefully selected to provide visual and experiential dimensions of the material that written text alone cannot deliver. For each resource, I have noted what it offers and why it belongs in your preparation for this week’s work.
Recommended Videos
| Format | Title / Resource | Why It Matters |
| Video | Rick Hanson: The Neuroscience of Meditation States (YouTube) | Connects the Buddhist jhāna system to contemporary neuroscience. Hanson is a psychologist and meditation teacher who bridges both worlds fluently. Excellent visual introduction to what ‘states of consciousness’ means scientifically. |
| Video | Ken Wilber: Introduction to the AQAL Framework (Integral Life, YouTube) | Wilber himself walks through the key distinctions of the AQAL model, including the crucial states-versus-stages distinction. Approximately 45 minutes and worth every minute. Helps orient Module 1’s comparative table in the larger framework of the course. |
| Video | Stanislav Grof: Holotropic States and the Cartography of the Psyche (various conference recordings, YouTube) | Grof describes his cartographic work in his own words, with clinical examples. His integration of ancient and modern frameworks is a masterclass in the kind of honest comparison this module is asking you to perform. |
| Video | Robert Monroe: Interview with John Lax (Monroe Institute archive, YouTube) | One of the few extended interviews with Monroe in which he discusses the Focus level system directly. Hearing Monroe describe his own cartographic discoveries in his own voice is invaluable for understanding what the Monroe model is claiming. |
| Video | Rupert Sheldrake & Stephen Harrod Buhner: Plant Intelligence and Consciousness (YouTube) | An excellent expansion on shamanic and animist cartographies of consciousness that brings contemporary scientific thinking to bear on the oldest maps we have. |
| Video | Upanishads Explained: The Five Koshas (various educators, YouTube) | Multiple short explainers are available. Look for those that connect the kosha system to actual meditative experience rather than merely describing it philosophically. Recommended search: ‘five koshas meditation experience.’ |
| Video | Thomas Campbell: My Big TOE Overview (YouTube playlist) | Campbell’s own presentation of his Theory of Everything. The early lectures are particularly relevant to this module’s comparative analysis. His physics-based framing of Monroe’s Focus levels is uniquely illuminating. |
