A Note Before This Module Begins

Most people who come to this subject arrive already holding one of two verdicts. The first verdict says this is a fringe curiosity dressed up in lab coats, recreational drug culture laundered through university letterhead. The second says science has already proven these substances are medical miracles, and the only thing standing between us and a cured world is bureaucratic cowardice. Neither verdict survives contact with the actual record. What follows is that record: the studies, the numbers, the institutions, and the setbacks, laid out as plainly as I can manage, so you can form a view that’s earned rather than inherited.

I want to say a word about why I’m asking you to hold both verdicts loosely before we go a single page further. In decades of studying consciousness, the pattern I’ve run into repeatedly is that the mind wants a verdict fast. It’s uncomfortable sitting with “this is complicated and the evidence cuts more than one way.” A fast verdict feels like safety. But a fast verdict is also, almost always, borrowed rather than earned. It’s the opinion of whichever camp got to you first. What I’m going to ask of you across this module is something harder and, I think, considerably more rewarding: sit with the actual data long enough to build your own view from the ground up. That’s not a neutral stance either. It’s discipline. And it’s the same discipline that underlies every serious piece of inner work this platform teaches.
